Fifth Green Flag!
On May 15th we attended the Green-Schools Awards Ceremony in the Fitzwilliam Hotel, Claremorris to collect our fifth green flag for Biodiversity. A further celebration took place the following Monday in the school with Ross Donovan and the whole school. Well done to all for their hard work in the attainment of this achievement!

The Great Plant Hunt.
Well done to everybody involved in taking part in the Great Plant Hunt which we did with gaining our fifth Green Schools flag in mind. Ms. McLoughlin took part in a survey after the event and outlined all of the hard work the pupils have put in. As a result of this we have two bits of good news. Firstly, our endeavouur was recognised and we have won a Biodiversity workshop which will take place on Monday 19th June. Secondly, evidence of our work has been published in the 'Toyota Motor Ireland and Foundation for Environmental ' website. I have included a link below to the website.
Our hard work has paid off!
The hard work the pupils have been putting doing in preperation for our application for our fifth Green Schools flag has continued this term. Our 'Bug Hotel' is open for business and we are looking forward to the first guests who are expected to check in in the coming weeks! Ms. McLoughlin has been keeping on top of the paper work side of things and keeping An Taisce up to date with our progress. All the work has been rewarded as the school has been mentioned in two publications in the last few weeks. One of the pictures of our pupils has been incorrectly labelled as a school from Tipperary but I am sure that you will recognise a few familiar faces. Please follow the links below.
Recent visitors.
In the last few weeks we have had a number of interesting wildlife visitors to the school. The children have seen Blue Tits, Wagtails and Robins to name but a few of the birds that have been attracted by our bird feeders. More notably, Joseph Morahan spotted a Mink wandering around the perimeter of the school. A few of the children managed to see the illusive creature before it disappeared. I have attached a couple of pictures below including a hazy view of the Mink.
A visit from Micheal Bell.
At the end of October Michael Bell, from the Heritage Council, visited the school. He talked to us about how important Biodiversity is and plants, animals and trees found in our area. The pupils also created a Biodiversity map of our school grounds. We hope to welcome Michael back in the summer term.
Senior Class gardening and the newly elected Green Schools Committee.
Junior Gardening
The pupils in the Junior Classroom have certainly been very busy in the garden during September! They planted a range of bulbs so that, come next Spring, we'll have a fabulous colourful garden to enjoy. As well as planting snowdrops, they also set miniature tulips, crocuses and anemones. The pots containing last year's narcissi & daffodils have also been prepared for a blooming lovely spring! This work forms part of the Biodiversity theme: the fifth Green-schools Flag we will be working towards over the next two years.
